Buwama croc’s farm and lake resort
This is a site located 32 kilometers on Kampala-Masaka high way and 8 km off the high way. It is a recreational facility where crocodiles are bred for commercial purposes of conservation because the crocodiles are among the lists of the world endangered species.
The site was started in 1991 but later abandoned until 2001 when it was re-energized. The site has approximately 200 crocodiles according to Frank Asiimwe the proprietor and these are fed on beef, chicken and fish. They export the skin to Italy, France and South Korea .
The Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC)
Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) was opened in1952 by the colonial government then, as an animal’s orphanage that offered sanctuary to young animals found abandoned in protected areas due to the death or poaching of parent animals. In the early 1960s, it became traditional view and became commonly known as a Entebbe zoo in which even non-indigenous species like bears and tigers were kept as an attraction.
Because of the practical turmoil and inadequate government funding, the zoo became continually run down until May 1994 when a proposal was made by the New York zoological society now the world conservation society to turn into conservation education center for conservation awareness purposes hence the name, Uganda Wildlife Education Center Trust. Currently the center is being sponsored by the World Bank through the protected areas management and sustainable use (PAMI&SU) Project. With a vision to promote and create an understanding of conserving the biodiversity in Uganda among the public with specific emphasis on the young generation using the facilities at Entebbe
The major activities that can interest our guests in these location include the following; Rhino exhibits, exhibiting the southern white rhinos.
Lion exhibits, exhibiting the lion Budongo chimp exhibit, exhibiting chimpanzees
Uganda’s cob meadow, a mixed exhibiting Uganda cob and crested crane (Uganda’s natural symbol), sitatunga and bush back wetland aviary exhibits, shoebill stork, weavers, ducks, free ranging monitor lizard.
A forest walk and nature trail, it is 1000m along with free ranging monkeys birds, butterflies and world medicinal plants.
Bird watching, UWEC has over 200 species of free ranging birds including weaves, sunbirds and Kingfishers. Medicinal gardens. UWEC boasts of a wealth of medicinal plants/herbs, they have 250 species, which are well labeled with details of their medicinal use. The beach. This is about 4oom stretch of the lake Victoria shores. There is soft music play in it every Sunday to suit the resort mood.
WATER RESOURCES FOR TOURISTSsezibwa falls
This is one of the sites that were visited during the study tour and it specifically falls under the Kabaka’s trail system and this site is of great significance to the Kabaka kingdom of Uganda. The site. is located on the Eastern side of the City 30 km on the Kampala-Jinja Highway and it is 1.5 km from kayunga a local trading center on the highway.
Ssezibwa falls is said to be a Man Made attraction because legend has it that a lady by the names Nakungu gave birth.
Bujagalie falls
This is one of the many rapids found at the source of river Nile these are the biggest fall found down stream Owen falls dam and are locate in the jinja district a few kilometer from the center of the district along the river Nile. These rapids were formed during the Miocene periods when earth movements were at work in East Africa and these were formed when hard basement rock formed after faulting left hard rocks exposed and when water passed over these rocks it formed the falls. The rapids provide an ideal location for white water rafting and this is the only site in Africa where such an activity s carried
Jinja Nile Resort
This is a riverside resort, located off Jinja –Busia highway to offer recreational activities to the tourists visiting the Jinja “school of tourist attractions”. It is located on the way leading to Bujagali falls, 6-10mins drives from the Ling-ling hotel. This resort is privately owned providing a lot of tourist activities. Rafting, this is most carried out by a drift and is one of the most exciting experiences of the site. Bungee jumping, here a guest is suspended and splashed down and touches the Nile waters from the bungee platform made of metal and guest suspended using loose thin rope. |
